What should I set the DPI for on my scanner?
Dots per inch, more is better, right? - wrong! All my photo's on this site have a resolution of 640x480 or less, all my scanned images were scanned at 75dpi or 100dpi. The bigger the number, the larger the file and the larger the file, the longer it takes to download before you can see it.
If you just want to view the image on your screen 100dpi is fine. If you want to print the image set it for 300dpi. Try to match it up with your printers resolution. Scan the same picture at different dpi settings and print each one out - do you see much difference?
Time is another factor, with higher dpi settings it will take longer to scan, not to mention the file will become very large. If you think your scanner takes to long to scan a photo go ahead and set the image resolution lower.
File types will also make a difference. BMP files can get very large, if you are going to send the scanned image by email you will want to save in the JPG format (it will be about 1/10th the size).
