How can I cut down on all that junk email that I get?
Use several email address's. Use your main account for yourself, family and friends and use another one for registering software, signing up for prizes etc. Although a lot of junk mail has an opt out button to remove from list - DON'T TRUST IT. Most of the time when you opt out it only verifies your working email address. Simply put the best thing to do is just delete the message.
The Direct Marketing Association has a special web sit, www.e-mps.org that consumers and businesses can register their e-mail addresses, asking not to be sent unsolicited electronic junk mail.
How does it work for consumers?
Consumers can apply and, for security purposes, re-confirm their individual
registration with the e-Mail Preference Service (e-MPS).
All DMA members who wish to send unsolicited commercial e-mail must purge their e-mail lists of the individuals who have registered their e-mail address with e-MPS. The service is also available to non-members so that all marketers may take advantage of this service to eliminate the names of those who wish to get less unsolicited commercial e-mail.
What is the expected result?
Those on the list will receive no unsolicited e-mail from DMA members (unless
they have an already-established on-line business relationship with that
company.) In addition, commercial e-mail solicitations from non-DMA members
should be reduced because most marketers know that they will not be successful
in marketing to those individuals who have taken the time to place their names
on e-MPS.
The greater the number of marketers who use the service, the greater the reduction in unsolicited commercial e-mail consumers will experience.
Why would a marketer want to use e-MPS?
Marketers use, as at least one measure of success, the building of long term
relationships with customers. They do not want to irritate consumers who might
be receptive to hearing from them in other media or who might buy from them
directly without being solicited.
How does it work for marketers?
The e-MPS is a suppression file only and it is not released to a marketer or any
other third party who wants to send you a commercial message.
Any marketer that uses this service, sends their list electronically to e-MPS. All e-mail addresses registered with e-MPS are removed from the marketer's list. The "cleaned" list is returned electronically to the marketer.
