Unable to get online with my DSL cisco modem (Code Red Virus)

A worm called the "Code Red" worm may have temporarily interrupted some Qwest DSL customer's use of the service. Only Qwest DSLSM customers using certain older Cisco modems with a specific configuration were effected.  The worm did not impact the majority of DSL customers

For those customers with the Cisco 675/678 modem who may be experiencing the worm problem's please follow these steps to reset the modem.

Getting Started

Disconnect the DSL telephone line from the wall.  Next, unplug the power of the 675/678 modem from the electrical outlet, waiting a few seconds for the connection to be completely severed and then plug the power cord for the modem back into the electrical outlet wall.  Then follow these instructions to close the web interface.

STEP 1
Connect your Cisco 675/678 to your PC - connect the serial management cable to a "COM" port on your PC and to the "MGMT" port on the back of the Cisco 675/678.

NOTE 1: Detailed cable installation instructions can be found in your Qwest DSLSM user guide under the Manual Modem Configuration section.

NOTE 2: Identify the PC COM Port the serial management cable is installed on. You will need this information for the next step.

STEP 2
In this step, a terminal emulation connection is required to connect to the Cisco 675/678. HyperTerminal is a widely used terminal program that is included with Windows®. Detailed connection instructions can be found in your Qwest DSLSM User Guide under Manual Modem Configuration in Step 2.

To access HyperTerminal, click START on your Windows® desktop and select PROGRAMS. Then, select ACCESSORIES and then, select HYPERTERMINAL. Click on the HyperTerminal icon to launch HyperTerminal.

Windows 2000 users select START, PROGRAMS, then select ACCESSORIES, then select COMMUNICATIONS, and then select HYPERTERMINAL.

NOTE for Windows® 98 users: Loading Windows® 98 does not automatically load HyperTerminal. If you cannot find a HyperTerminal folder, load HyperTerminal from your Windows® 98 compact Disk.

STEP 3
Enter "Cisco 675/678" as a connection name and select an icon. Then, select OK.

STEP 4
In the CONNECT USING field, select the COM port you connected the blue cable to and noted in Step 1. Then, select OK.

STEP 5
In the Properties window, please set the port settings as follows.

  • Bits per second: 38400
  • Data bits: 8
  • Parity: None
  • Stop bits: 1
  • Flow control: None
Then, select OK.


NOTE: If you are unable to connect to your router using the above settings, insert 9600 for "Bits Per Second" under port settings and try to reconnect to your modem.

STEP 6
Press Enter to initiate the session in HyperTerminal. If the session does not initiate, press Enter again. A CBOS prompt will appear as follows: (If this does not appear, hit enter.  If it still does not appear try the telnet option described below)

STEP 7
If you set an executive password, please type it and press Enter. If you have not set an executive password, please press Enter to access the Cisco 675/678® and the following prompt will appear.

NOTE: The Cisco 675/678 is default set to not have a password. Only if you previously provisioned an executive password will you need one to enter the Cisco 675/678. Qwest recommends setting an executive password for security purposes.

STEP 8
Type "enable" at the cbos> prompt. Then, press Enter.

If you set an enable password, please type it and press Enter. If you have not set an enable password, please press Enter to access the Cisco 675/678® and the following prompt will appear.

NOTE: The Cisco 675/678 is default set to not have a password. Only if you previously provisioned an enable password will you need one to enter the Cisco 675/678. Qwest recommends setting an enable password for security purposes.

STEP 10
Type "set web disable" and then press Enter.

Type "set web port xxxx" and then press Enter.
NOTE: xxxx equals a number; type in a random number between 1025 and 9999.

Type "write" and then press Enter.

STEP 13
Type "reboot" and then press Enter.

Exit out of hyperterminal
Plug the DSL telephone line into wall.

Enter Telnet 10.0.0.1 in OPEN: box and select OK
At the password prompt input exec password (if customer does not have one the 675/678 default is nothing so just hit enter)
